About this dish

Napoleon is Russia's take on the mille-feuille: many crisp layers of puff pastry with vanilla custard cream between them. It is said to have been created in Moscow in 1912, for the centenary of Napoleon's retreat from Russia, and it has been the family-celebration cake ever since.
